Is nobody here wild about Australian silver & gold coins?

Seems there are no big fans of Kangaroos or Kookaburras here at all, which causes me to stay away from these bullion coins.

Did I miss anybody, or are Aussie coins just a poor choice for PM investments?

Why pay a premium? I haven't seen aussie gold coins priced competitively with Krugerands.

I own some 24K Gold Kangaroos.

They are currently priced about the same as the Maple Leafs.

Nothing against Krugerrands but...

There is a bigger demand worldwide for 24K Gold bullion.
Thus premiums are rising worldwide for 24K Gold bullion.

An example...

About 3 years ago I bought 15 one oz. Gold Pandas.
The spread was less than 5% at the time I bought them.

Now with gold at $493.00 APMEX wants $518.00 apiece for Gold Pandas! :afraid:

Nuff Said!

24K Bullion Premiums are rising because there is more demand for them!

i would simply buy silver as close as the spot price you can get it. this is going to be the buy of the century. with history and numbers to back it up.

Same argument used in favor of numismatics. It may be true but there is no guarantee that past performance determines future returns. In fact, logic dictates that ASTHTF (as the $hit hits the fan), "when" being a foregone conclusion, "shiny object syndrome" will become less important as our economy collapses.
TPTB do not want investors to take PM's off the market because it will drive up the price and make fiat look awkward. Every penny you waste on premiums is money you could have spent on metal. TPTB want you to pay premiums so less metal will be taken off the market.

The silver lunar series are nice,

I bought a 2oz 99 rabbit, a 2oz 06 dog for my wife and kid. Im waiting for the 2007 boar to come out then thats all Im buying of them. Maybe if we have another kid ill buy the corrisponding 2 oz coin. but other than that, I cant really see paying the high premium.

Hivemindgammahydra7 11-22-2005 03:15 PM

Bummer...

Sounds like the premiums are the deal-breaker, then. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to stick with Gold and Silver Maples sold locally. What a shame too because the Aussie designs look nice, but like you guys say the money spent on premiums could be $ used for more PM's. :frown:

Everybody should own some 24K Bullion.

Owning all Krugerrands would get awful boring.

Its like buying all frozen pizzas from the grocery store. You have to treat yourself once in awhile and go to a Round Table Pizza Parlor. :D

Maple Leafs and Aussie Kangaroos both cost less than those 22K Eagles so take advantage of it while the price differential lasts.

Well, I don't have a huge gold/silver collection but what I have is some k-rands. A couple of 1 oz pandas and Australian lunar series. A few sovereigns (I live in the UK). A few assorted 1/10 oz gold. Silver some generic bars and rounds. Some eagles. Some maples. Some lunar and pandas.

What is so wrong with a variety of stuff? Whatever happens, SOMETHING will be the right thing! I don't get this guessing gold or silver, junk or eagles???? Get some of everything! The Perth Mint are great coins. If you like them, get a few! According to some people on this forum, the world should have ended last July! It didn't!! Shop around. Good luck!:D

Re: Is nobody here wild about Australian silver & gold coins?

<!--StartFragment --> I don't buy "shiny silver," the premium is just too much to swallow. 90% bags are the way to go, IMHO.
Australian Nuggets/Kangas are actually my bullion coin of preference. .999, lower premium than Eagles, not subject to the damage of Maples, and if the US gets uppity about gold, somewhat easier to sell.
I buy Krugs for my out-of-country stash.

True enough!

Hmmm. Indeed, variety is the spice of life - isn't that how the old maxim goes? After reading the additional posts I can see the wisdom of your perspectives, and will therefore cheerfully diversify.

Thanks once again for your input, as it's gratefully appreciated!

Reallllly, people... what's a few bucks spread on the premium, considering where gold is ultimately headed? Unless you are buying a LOT, this is no big deal. I like ALL 24K coins (but I don't have them all lol). The Aussie coins are very nice imo. I live in North America and this year gave my mom a 1oz. Nugget for her birthday, in its nice protective holder. Premium: $25 or so. The look on her face: PRICELESS!

Love the Aussie coins but don't want to pay the premium. Get the most for the FRNs I can is my goal. Like the Pandas also but have not bought either for a couple of years.
